Writer’s block is a common hurdle faced by almost all type of writers, be it fiction or non-fiction. It often comes without a warning and the reason is almost always unknown. The worst thing about writer’s block is that there’s no way to know for how long it may stick around, might be for a few minutes, hours, or even days. Studies state that the reasons could be many like distraction, mental stress, exhaustion, etc, but the exact reason cannot be known. While there is no defined way to prevent it, there could certainly be ways employed to work through it.

Reflecting from my own experience, I found these ways handy to break out of the block.

  • Starring at the screen won’t help

It is normal to get frustrated when the ideas aren’t rolling in and starring at the screen while figuring out what to type next just won’t help. The ideal solution would be to shut your screen for a while and take a break. Going out for a walk or getting some fresh air could help refresh your brain and welcome fresh ideas.

  • Inspiration can come from places you least expect

The words and ideas you are struggling for are not going to secretly appear on the screen. But they can be hidden anywhere, so looking beyond your screen is the key. Admiring the floating clouds in the sky, having a conversation with a friend or a family member, enjoying a hot cup of coffee, taking a relaxing shower, going out on a run while passing through some strangers, literally anything can tick off that nerve in your brain which would generate wonderful ideas.

  • Staying fit physically and mentally

This may seem like a textbook suggestion but a very crucial one. Indulging in physical activities and maintaining a healthy diet can go long way to keep your mind sound and calm. Also helps in de-cluttering unwanted thoughts from your mind, thus keeping it focused.

  • Channelizing negative to positive

Sometimes, it is impossible to control your mind when it is down with negative thoughts due to any possible reasons. In that instance, forcefully trying to put away the thoughts or trying hard to distract your mind may not give an effective result. Instead, embrace and accept them and in turn use those negative emotions as strength to expand your perspectives and your writing. Remember, Taylor Swift wouldn’t have had as many hit albums if she hadn’t embraced her break-ups.

You may still face the block even after following the above steps, just like I did while writing this article. The most important point is to assure yourself that it is okay. Mind knows when it is being pressurized and it can only work in creative ways when it is set free.
